Before January 16, 1938, Carnegie Hall was a place of high brow music. But on that date, Jazz came to the Hall for the first time, and the legendary Benny Goodman was the one to bring it. Goodman laughed when the idea was first presented to him, but he warmed up to it and threw himself into the concert with a passion. He mixed famous favorites with new songs, and threw in "Twenty Years of Jazz," a musical tribute to the history of the sound.
The concert sold out in advance, with the most expensive seats going for $2.75.
Recordings of the concert were thought to be lost until 1950 when Benny's sister-in-law found a set of acetates. The 33 1/3 album sold over a million copies. It was released on CD several times, with the latest being in 2006.

Cool post! Wow - $2.75 for the pricey seats! Any idea what that would translate into in today's economy? Thanks for sharing!
Always appreciate your visits to Life Lessons! Ah, basking in His peace! Perfect picture, Kristen! Some things aren't meant for us to figure out - guess that's where that 'faith' thing comes in! Have a blessed week, my friend. :)
